Prompt: Someone is diagnosed with a mental illness
Character: Helmeri
Illness: Schizophrenia
Character 2: Tera
He stood at the pharmacy of this small town, wings ruffling anxiously. It had been a long time since he'd heard the voices, after all. While he actually somewhat enjoyed them- A few at least, most were unwanted!- it mean he would need to begin taking his medication once more. On top of his hormone medication it meant he'd more than likely not be able to fly for a few weeks as he readjusted. This would suck, he realized.
His talons clicked on the solid ground, an uncomfortable mix of stone and dirt. The rest were walking far ahead, chattering among themselves while glancing back to see if Helmeri had gotten lost. He'd just give them a disdainful glare when they did, shuffling a bit closer to them with a frown on his lips. Mornings were always the worst, the medication hadn't taken effect and he could still hear and see his hallucinations.
He tried to ignore it, just walking and pointedly ignoring them to the best of his abilities. Kind of hard to when one was whispering things into his ears. But he'd long since gotten used to this sort of thing and merely tuned them out.
Living people were a lot less easy to tune out. "Hey, Helmeri." That most certainly belonged to Tera. He'd be able to pick out that high pitched voice anywhere. He sighed and glanced to her, noting she'd fallen back to walk beside him. "Why aren't you flying?" Tera asks curiously with a smile on her face, eyes twinkling with interest.
How to reply.. Helmeri tentatively chooses to explain, draping his wing over her shoulder. "I.. Cannot fly for the first few hours after taking my medication, Ter." He mumbles in embarrassment, looking away with a sigh. That only seemed to interest her further as she faced him.
"But your hormone medication never bothered you before.." She starts, only to get cut off by Helmeri.
"No, my other medication. Haven't had it in several months. Getting readjusted to it." Helmeri admits softly, reluctantly glancing back towards her. "For the uh.. Voices in my head." He explains with a sigh and a frown.
"You.. Have Schizophrenia?" Tera asks with a surprised expression on her face, to which he nods slightly, frowning widely. He didn't like talking about it much. It just got him stares and booted out of his tribe. No use in talking about it.
"Take medication for it. Even if it doesn't always work. Can we drop this? I don't like talking about it." The avian huffs, retracting his wing from Tera's side and letting it fold against his back once more.
He hadn't even noticed it, too focused on the human, that the voices had stopped. A quick glance told him that his medication had finally kicked in. Even if it was going to make him sick he took to the air, just barely hearing Tera give a confirming noise as he ascended over the group. Too many damned memories..
